“The phenomenon of violence - a barrier to achieving SDG 5 - gender equality”
On November 22, 2023, at the Romanian Institute for Human Rights took place the debate entitled “The phenomenon of violence - barrier to achieving SDG 5 - gender equality”, in the context of the celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The event was organized by the Institute, in partnership with the Romanian Women’s Association - Together (AFRI), Sensiblu Foundation and NAZARCEA Grup.
The existing barriers to the full exercise of the rights and freedoms of women and girls constitute as many obstacles to the successful achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, the fulfillment of which is promoted and supported by the RIHR.
Representatives of national institutions and NGOs concerned with women’s rights were brought together by RIHR’s Working Group, signaling both the progress made in combating violence and the existing obstacles in the exercise of women’s rights in the Romanian society. Were analyzed the developments in legislation at the national level, the most recent recommendations from the GREVIO Report of June 16, 2022 regarding Romania, as well as the recommendations formulated in 2023 for Romania by the UN Working Group for the Universal Periodic Review. During the debate, was presented the study on “Domestic Violence. Paradigms and Judicial Practice”published by the Institute in 2022. On this occasion, the Campaign to combat online violence was launched as a call to action regarding the spreading of cyber-violence and of hate speech. Last but not least, was emphasized the need to combat the construction of stereotypical images and models of women in the mass media and on social networks.
