United Nations Open-ended Working Group on Aging (OEWGA)

The 13th session of the United Nations Open-ended Working Group on Aging (OEWGA) is taking place from April 3rd to April 6th. The role of OEWGA is to strengthen the human rights protection of older persons, with the participation of national human rights institutions and non-governmental organisations working in the field of the protection of older persons.

Several national human rights institutions, including the Romanian Institute for Human Rights, support the adoption of a convention dedicated to the rights of older persons, with the aim of reducing disparities in the field of older persons’ protection. We recall that in August 2022, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) organised a multiparty meeting with various stakeholders. The conclusions of the report prepared after the meeting indicate that ”States should, in collaboration with civil society, national human rights institutions, the United Nations, and older persons themselves, develop and adopt a comprehensive human rights convention for older persons, building upon existing regional rights and instruments. Such a convention should, among other things, accelerate the transition from medical approaches that perceive older persons merely as recipients of care and social protection, to an approach that recognizes them as rights holders.” (See Summary of the multilateral meeting on the human rights of older persons, Report of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, A/HRC/52/49, Paragraph 38).
