The right of peaceful assembly
In September this year, the Committee on Civil and Political Rights issued General Comment no. 37 on the right to peaceful assembly (Article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights). The Romanian translation can be consulted here.
The right to peaceful assembly is a very valuable and useful tool for recognizing and fulfilling a wide range of other rights, including economic, social and cultural rights, which are of particular importance to marginalized individuals and groups.Failure to respect and guarantee the right of peaceful assembly is a typical sign of repression, and protection of the right of peaceful assembly is possible only when other often overlapping rights are protected, in particular freedom of expression, free association and political participation.
